A healthy lifestyle + Alaska's Family Fun Run

Clean Eating

I've been an advocate of healthy living for over 5 years now. This change in lifestyle was brought about by a thyroid condition which put me at great risk in 2008. After my surgery that year, I thought everything was going to be alright. Well, it did but little did I know that my life after the surgery will require me to exert double- triple- quadruple efforts mostly to lose pounds and maintain my ideal weight. I remember going from having a hyperthyroid and on some days it becomes under-active, which freaks me out more. I was scared that I might become obese.

I am continuously learning about everything there is to know about the thyroid. There were days when I got frustrated but eventually when I found myself accepting that it’s part of my life now ( play dramatic music now, lol ), it started to bring positive changes in me. Science has not yet found something to totally bring this whole thyroid thing of mine back-to-normal, so I found ways to cheat ( at least that’s what I think ) my thyroid condition with healthy eating, exercising instead of sitting on the couch all day watching television or spending hours on the internet, doing my best to not stress about the trivial things, et cetera. And, in the process, I have encouraged family members, relatives, friends, and some colleagues to embrace a healthier lifestyle. This becomes more fun, easier, and more encouraging when everyone in the family is at it. Yup, even children. No one is neither too young nor too old for a healthier lifestyle. Agree?

Alaska World Milk Day

While we health buffs are growing in numbers, it helps that there are more brands and products that promote wellness, clean living, and an active lifestyle ... and, one of these brands is Alaska. On Sunday, 31-May 2015, Alaska will hold a fun at the Mall of Asia as part of its Alaska World Milk Day celebration. Categories for the fun run are:

» 100m and 1KM for kids
» 3KM
» 3KM Family
» 5KM and 10KM

Another exciting activity that participants may look forward to this Sunday is the launching of the Milk Hour, which will happen at 6 o' clock in the morning in four different locations: Manila, Baguio, Cebu, and Davao. Milk Hour aims to promote proper nutrition for kids. I recently found out that World Milk Day is celebrated annually in many countries to provide an opportunity on milk as a global food central to health and well-being across cultures and nations, and to highlight the contributions connected to milk and the overall dairy industry. I love milk so I guess I will be celebrating with my fellow milk-lovers all over the world.

For more information about World Milk Day, you can visit www.alaskaworldmilkday.com. And, if you don't have plans yet for this weekend, do join the Alaska Family Fun Run this coming Sunday, 31-May 2015 at the Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. Encourage your family to a healthier lifestyle + to drink milk, too!Ü

Race Day: May 31, 2015 ( Sunday )
Venue: SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds, Block 16 Seaside Boulevard cor. Palm Coast Avenue
Start Line: Seaside Boulevard cor. Bayshore Avenue
Categories: 100M, 1KM, 3KM Individual, 3KM Family, 5KM, and 10KM

Are you and your family into fun runs? If not, what healthy activities does your family love to do?

Sorry to hear you have such condition. :( But at least you know how to deal with it without causing additional harm to your health. I will include your health in my prayers. :)

Any programs that support and promote proper nutrition - especially for children - are so important! I am so happy to see that these programs are spreading all over the world.

My family likes to take walks together. We also love a good dance party or wrestling match in the living room :)

I have been on thyroid meds for many years now-thankfully no surgery!! Losing weight not only helps your thyroid or lack thereof but it also makes it easier on your heart!

I have been lucky that my thyroid has never been an issue. That has to be hard to go through. But the Milk Hour is a really neat idea.

Sounds like a great event. I walk with my dad and mom 3 to 4 times a week. I've never joined a fun run before, but I would love to. I hope I can also get my parents to join.

Have a run tomorrow! I trust the thyroid condition is manageable now? The walnuts looks yummy, what's sprinkled on the bananas?

Fernando Lachica said...

Healthy living is really a must for everyone and groups have generated this awareness program. Manufacturers of healthy foods increased enormously over the past years.

sorry to hear about what led to your surgery. I've been a firm believer in healthy eating for the past few months. It's always great to run into articles by people on the same journey. thanks

Fred Hawson said...

Oh this is tomorrow already! Since it is very hot, the contestants should really take care. The heat this summer is really too much, even at that time in the morning.

Oh I agree! Never to old to get healthy. If only these fitness events aren't on Sundays!!! Grrr! I'm not available on Sundays.

I've never participated in a run before either - but I've had to eat really healthy since I moved up to the alpines - lots of allergies - and it's kept my weight down and energy up - Sorry to hear about your surgery - hope all is well and the run is great!

Now that I'm pregnant, I find it more difficult to stick to a healthy diet because of certain cravings. Maybe when i give birth, I'll go back to eating healthy.

This sounds like a fun way for the entire family to get healthy. It's been a long time since I've been able to exercise.

Yum! Your breakfast looks amazing. I think my son would actually like it since he enjoyed eating bananas. I'd maybe swap the bananas for strawberries so we could both eat it (I don't like fresh bananas at all).

Eating well is more important than ever. Bravo on your continued efforts to eat healthy!

My thyroid is all sorts of screwy. I'm weird in that I'm one of the few who has hyper, yet still gains weight from it and has a really hard time loosing. My doc has said diet won't help my thyroid, but I'm eating healthier to try to get the weight off.

Nicol said...

It does take time to a accept that you've got a condition but it's great that you've learnt to embrace it. Keeping a healthy lifestyle is the way to go

I try to eat as healthy as I can, but I usually end up giving into my urges. That family fun run sounds like a blast!

Yes, indeed. Committing to healthy lifestyle takes mental focus, and regular checks. This fun run looks like a great event for all in the family!

Katrina Centeno said...

I have not joined a single run since it became popular. But I have slowly shifting to a healthier lifestyle by trying to avoid soda and through regular exercise. Oh, I know a few friends who have undergone thyroid surgery and it can change a person's outlook.

HilLesha O'Nan said...

I'm adamant about living a healthy lifestyle, but I have been suspecting an under-active thyroid for the past year despite what the doctors have to say. I have most of the classic signs.

Franc said...

By the way, did you run this one? I joined this one last year and it was so festive.

I remember my childhood days were formed with alaska moments. Alaska has been my childhood milk. And yes, it's been my mom's partner in raising us up. Sabi nga "wala pa ring tatalo sa alaska!"

My sister suffered from thyroid and she lost a lot of weight and keep it off. She is ok now and no need for surgery. Just hold on there and eat healthy.

Healthy living is what everyone is working towards nowadays. But there is so much more beyond just healthy food, but also the lifestyle. There will be new ways to work towards the healthy life everyone aims to be, but one must be willing to do it and take the first step first!

Sumi Go said...

It might've been hard to deal with your thyroid condition, but I'm glad that you've triumphed over it. :) Definitely agreeing that embracing a healthier lifestyle is the way to go! I've been eating clean and doing the best I can to live healthier, although I have to agree that it really takes a LOT of effort. Meal prepping pa lang, bongga na sa effort. Haha! It's even harder on my part since not everyone in the family is on the bandwagon, although I appreciate their support.

Anyhow, so nice to hear that Alaska is also advocating a healthier, more active lifestyle. :) Was at MoA on the 31st, but sadly, I didn't get to participate. >.< Didn't know about the event. Tsk tsk...
